In Honor of Women: Hip Hop Verse, Poetry, & Performance

This lesson is by Grover Cleveland Winfield III, the son of the late Grover C. Winfield, Jr. and Theodora Pollard Winfield. He earned his M.F.A. in Creative Writing, with and emphasis in poetry, from Old Dominion University in May of 2004. Entering his 19th year in education, Cleveland Winfield currently teaches English 11 and Dual Enrollment English Composition and American Literature at Rappahannock High School in Warsaw, Virginia. In addition to his teaching duties, Cleveland Winfield serves his school system as the Faculty Athletics Representative for Rappahannock High School and as the chairperson of the Richmond County Public Schools Multicultural Diversity Committee.

This generative activity celebrates the women in our lives and comes to us at perfect timing – Black History Month and Valentine’s Day. Next month is Women’s History Month – also perfect! This lesson includes an engaging writing prompt and mentor texts by Tupac, Common, Talib Kweli, and Cleveland Winfield himself!
